Ease into Winter

ree

Winter heralds the season of restoration and deep nourishment. It is understood as a time when the outer world rests so the inner world may strengthen. Animals hibernate, birds fly South and the plants retreat to their roots. The world grows quieter. It is a powerful reminder that growth does not always look like action.

The energetic Winter qualities in Yoga are: softness, slowing down and introspection. Because nature gives us less sunlight and more cold, Winter teaches us to store rather than expend.

Our Winter organs are the Kidneys and the Bladder.  Our kidneys store vital essence and they govern our bones, ears and lower back. The Bladder regulates our fluid elimination and detoxes.

Emotionally the Bladder is linked with the ability to move through fear and to set healthy boundaries. The Kidneys are the energetic root of life, holding our deepest reserves of vitality and inner wisdom.

Our practice will be centered around fluidity, we will move like water and we will nurture our inner warmth. We will mobilize our Kidneys with gentle back bends and longer forward bends. The Bladder meridian will be supported by lengthening the hamstrings and the spine.

Much love,

Marielle
